![]() ![]() Not that Twitch is the end-all, be-all of a game’s success, but it has been an immense popularity driver for Fortnite, both in terms of stream popularity, where the game has created all-time Twitch legends like Ninja (now earning almost $600,000 a month from Twitch subscriptions alone), but also smartly doing deals with Twitch for Prime loot which got even more players playing and watching. Twitch has anointed it king of the streaming mountain, and it’s fun to watch Epic’s speed is what’s helped drive Fortnite’s success, probably more than almost any other factor. The game is constantly patched and updated, where fixes and additions often take no more than a few days to make their way into a game, while Destiny 2 takes six months to fix a bugged quest icon. Fortnite got to consoles before PUBG, it’s getting to mobile before any shooter, really. Fortnite is not the most technically complex game on earth to begin with, but add the fact that Epic is working with their own engine, Unreal, and that results in incredible speed in all areas. Part of the reason that Fortnite is, and continues to be such a success is because Epic is so damn fast when it comes to every aspect of the game’s development. I’m hearing talk that powerhouses like Blizzard are “aware” of BR’s popularity and may be developing their own version, but how much time will Fortnite get to rule this roost? It seems poised to be the League of Legends of the BR genre, second to arrive, perhaps, but the ultimate champion able to take on all newcomers.Įpic using their own Unreal engine means more platforms, more patches, more additions, more quickly A few other titles may attempt to spin out BR modes as time goes on (I expect Call of Duty may try a smaller scale version of one this fall), but Fortnite has had months competing only with PUBG, which has helped both games grow rapidly. Outside of Fortnite and PUBG, no one else even seems close to releasing a competitive Battle Royale game at this level, because no one understood just how insanely popular this genre would become until a few months ago. ![]() It seems like this idea should have failed miserably, but the building really works, and for all PUBG’s complaints about Fortnite BR copying them, the building aspect is something that really sets the two apart from one another. I can’t blame other shooters for not imagining that building cover and high ground on the spot would be a core part of a fun gameplay experience, but Epic stumbled into something brilliant here because of what Fortnite was originally supposed to be, a building/defense title. The building element is something entirely unique to the genreĪnd the building aspect works, which is the key part of all of this. The aesthetic almost dictates the gameplay, in a lot of ways, as the entire game is based around people quickly constructing towers and walls and ramps, which would seem ridiculous in any other title, but not here. And because of its cartoony nature, Fortnite has been able to go fully wacky with creative skins and even weapons like grenades that force you to dance in place. Not that PUBG is a terrible looking game, but it does blend in with a landscape of other realism-based shooters, where Fortnite clearly stands out. However, this is a tiny sacrifice to make in order to play Fortnite Battle Royale on your smartphone. This may sound minor, but I genuinely believe that a large part of Fortnite’s success is because of its cartoony, almost Pixar-ish aesthetic. If we're honest, unlike these games with phenomenal touchscreen controls, controlling Fortnite Battle Royale on mobile takes some getting used to, and you're not going to be as fast at moving and shooting as a you are on computer or console. Having access to your progress and character while moving between platforms also sets the bar even higher for other developers. And future controller support will level the playing field for cross-play even further. Playing Fortnite Battle Royale on mobile will give you certain advantages over PC or console players, like the sound indicators. Even with the complex building system and control system, the developer has truly made something special. Epic Games has set the bar so high for future developers in making Fortnite run so well on mobile. Has Epic Games translated Fortnite as best they could? Absolutely, 100 percent, yes. Unless you don't have access to a computer or console, but you still want to play with friends, stick to playing against other mobile players. While cross-play allows you to go up against players on other platforms, it's not recommended. ![]() Is Fortnite Battle Royale on mobile the same as the PC or console versions? No. ![]()
